Earthquake Relief Program
The people of Baruwa VDC 6th and 8th were in dire need of a place to stay after their homes were destroyed in the devastating earthquake that hit Sindhupalchowk. A group of dedicated individuals stepped in to help, and they were able to settle a camp for 150 people at Kirati Chowk, Mulpani-Kathmandu. However, the land owner where the shelter was built would not allow them to stay longer, so the group searched for a new location and found an area of 8000 sqft provided by Dr. Ganesh Yonjon free of charge for a year.
On May 14th, the group moved the 150 people to the new location and provided them with twelve bundles of tin, which they used to build each room for a family and two toilets, as well as a kitchen. They also provided two meals a day and two time snacks to the people.
Recognizing that they would not be able to handle the costs in the long run, the group partnered with two organizations, Folk Nepal and Social Women Empowerment Organization, to support the shelter. They also reached out to other individuals and organizations to join hands in providing support.
It was later determined that Baruwa was no longer a safe zone to rehabilitate by the Government due to the maximum chances of landslide in coming monsoon, so many more people around 170+ were coming to Kathmandu. This lead to another group of people from the same village, Baruwa, to settle another shelter in Kathmandu, they reached out to the original group for support. The group visited and provided them with 900kgs of rice and 70 kilo of lentils and made two toilets for a time being and a shelter camp yesterday in Gokarna, Kathmandu and promised to look for a better shelter in the near future.
Folk Nepal and Social Women Empowerment Organization are doing their best to provide proper support to the proper group of people with their limited resources, and are making a big impact on the society and number of people. They hope that everyone will take part in supporting the victims, who are in need at the moment. If you want to join hands with Folk Nepal, you are always welcome and they appreciate your association with them.
